# Seven plant-based days: what measurably changes in metabolism

> Gut flora responds within 48 hours, blood lipids faster than weight. What studies on short-term plant-based eating show - and how the WOO® White Box Large Vegan structures the week.

Seven days sound like too little to move anything in metabolism. For some measures that is true - for others, far less is enough. Eat strictly plant-based for a week and you demonstrably change two systems: the gut flora and the blood lipids.

## The microbiome shifts within days

David and colleagues (2014) delivered the clearest evidence so far in Nature. Participants switched for five days to either a purely plant-based or a purely animal-based diet. The composition of the gut flora changed measurably **within 24 to 48 hours** - and returned just as quickly once the habitual diet resumed.

On plant-based food, fibre-fermenting bacterial groups increased and the production of short-chain fatty acids rose accordingly. This is not a re-education of the microbiome but a direct substrate signal: the bacteria able to use the food supplied multiply. That is exactly why duration matters - five days show the effect, seven days establish it.

## Blood lipids react faster than weight

Landry and colleagues (2023) published an unusually clean study in JAMA Network Open: 22 pairs of identical twins, one twin vegan, one omnivorous, both with meals delivered. Genetics and upbringing were thereby controlled. After only four weeks the vegan group showed lower LDL cholesterol and lower fasting insulin.

Yokoyama and colleagues (2017) place this in a wider frame in Nutrition Reviews: across 49 studies, plant-forward dietary patterns went consistently with lower total and LDL cholesterol. One week is none of those studies - but it shows the direction physiology moves in when fibre rises and saturated fat falls.

## Protein remains the critical point

Rogerson (2017) summarised in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition what matters practically on a plant-based diet: sufficient total amount, combination of several sources, attention to **leucine**. In a reduction phase this sharpens, because less is eaten overall while lean mass still has to be protected.

A short plant-based programme without defined protein portions is therefore not a programme but an omission. The question is not whether plant protein works - it is whether enough of it is on the table at the right time.

## How the WOO® White Box Large Vegan is set up

The **[WOO® White Box Large Vegan](/en/shop/woo-white-box-large-vegan)** covers seven fully plant-based days with reduction, fasting and build-up days according to the enclosed nutrition plan. It contains [WOO® Reset](/en/shop/woo-reset-box), [WOO® Vegan Walnuss Ahornsirup](/en/shop/woo-vegan-walnut-maple-syrup-can), [WOO® Metabolic](/en/shop/woo-metabolic-box) and WOO® Energy.

The composition fits the mechanisms described above well. WOO® Metabolic consists of around 67 percent inulin - precisely the fermentable substrate the gut flora responds to within days. WOO® Vegan Walnuss Ahornsirup supplies the protein, WOO® Energy the quickly available carbohydrate for the days scheduled for it, WOO® Reset minerals, L-glutamine and micronutrients. The walnut-maple flavour is deliberately not sweet-heavy - across a full week that is an advantage.

## Frequent questions

**Does the change in gut flora persist after the week?**
Only partly. The composition follows the substrate and moves back once the habitual diet resumes. To keep the effect, keep the fibre share - not the whole programme.

**Is a vegan week tolerable for omnivores?**
As a rule, yes. The most common adjustment reaction is more gas, caused by the higher fibre share. With pre-existing conditions, pregnancy or medication the decision belongs with a doctor.

**Why seven days instead of five?**
Five days show the effect, seven give it time. The microbial shift is measurable after two days; getting used to portion sizes and hunger perception takes longer.
