# Measuring your sweat rate: why hydration is a question of known volume

> Individual sweat rate varies by a factor of five - which is why blanket drinking advice falls short. How to establish your own rate in a single session, and what role 750 ml plays.

Almost every recommendation on fluid intake in sport quotes millilitres per hour. Almost nobody knows how much they actually drink. Between those two points sits a simple measuring instrument: a bottle with a known volume.

## Why fluid loss measurably costs performance

The relationship is well documented. From a fluid deficit of around 2 per cent of body weight, endurance performance declines measurably - Cheuvront and Kenefick have summarised the evidence. At 70 kg body weight that is 1.4 litres, an amount easily reached during an intense hour in a warm environment.

The mechanisms: plasma volume falls, the heart moves less volume per beat, heart rate rises at the same workload. At the same time thermoregulation deteriorates because less blood is available to carry heat to the skin. Nuccio and colleagues additionally showed that cognitive and technical performance - passing accuracy, decision quality - suffers under hypohydration.

## Individual sweat rate is not a constant

This is where it gets interesting. Sweat rate varies between individuals by a factor of five. In a methodological review, Baker documented values from roughly 0.5 to over 2.5 litres per hour, depending on intensity, climate, acclimatisation and genetics. Sodium concentration in sweat also fluctuates widely, from about 20 to over 80 mmol per litre.

Which means: blanket advice such as "drink half a litre per hour" is far too little for one person and too much for another. The ACSM position is therefore to determine intake individually rather than dose it generically.

## Self-test: establishing your own rate in one session

The procedure is practical. Weigh yourself lightly clothed before training, note how much you drink during the session, and weigh yourself again afterwards. Weight loss in kilograms plus litres consumed, divided by duration in hours, gives your sweat rate per hour.

## Frequently asked questions

**Isn't drinking to thirst enough?**
For efforts up to about an hour in moderate conditions, usually yes. In longer or hot sessions, the thirst mechanism demonstrably lags behind the loss, which is why planned intake makes sense.

**How do I judge my hydration status day to day?**
Armstrong and colleagues validated urine colour and osmolality as practical indicators. Pale yellow urine across the day and a stable morning weight are usable everyday markers.

**Can you drink too much?**
Yes. Excessive intake of plain water alongside heavy sweat losses can dilute sodium levels. In long efforts, electrolytes therefore belong in the fluid strategy.
