# Sweetness is learned: what happens when a shake has no flavouring and no sweetener

Almost every powder on the shelf tastes of something. That is rarely a nutritional decision but a sensory one, with consequences beyond the single shake. Sweetness perception is not a fixed value but a habit.

## Sweetness perception can be retrained

Wise and colleagues (2016) showed this cleanly. One group cut its intake of simple sugars by around 40 percent for three months, a control group ate as usual. Afterwards all rated identical sugar solutions: the reduction group perceived the same solution as **distinctly sweeter** than before.

The second half of the finding is the remarkable one. The sweetness rated as pleasant did not shift to the same degree - the taste was more intense, the preference stayed similar. The perceptual system recalibrates downwards when the stimulus falls. Drink heavily sweetened shakes for weeks and you shift your scale in the other direction.

## The argument about sweeteners - and how to sidestep it

Two bodies of evidence on low-calorie sweeteners only appear to contradict each other. Rogers and colleagues (2016) found in their systematic review that replacing sugars with sweeteners slightly lowers energy intake and body weight in controlled studies. In 2023 the WHO issued a conditional recommendation against sweeteners for weight control, based mainly on observational data.

Mattes and Popkin (2009) describe the mechanism under dispute: the uncoupled **cephalic phase**. Sweet taste announces energy that then fails to arrive. Whether that disturbs appetite regulation in the long run is open. A neutral base simply makes the question moot in everyday use.

## Neutral means combinable

The practical advantage is bigger than it sounds. A vanilla or cocoa shake is committed to one use: sweet, cold, with water or milk. A neutral base can go in both directions.

Sweet works with real ingredients: berries, cinnamon, a spoon of cocoa, coffee. Savoury works too - stirred into a vegetable soup, into mashed potato or a dip. That matters for everyone who, somewhere in a reduction phase, can no longer stand the sight of sweetness. Diets rarely break down for lack of discipline but through sensory fatigue.

## How WOO® Shape Neutral is set up

A 50 g serving in 300 ml of water delivers 20 g of protein and 209 kcal. The protein comes from **pea and rice protein** - a combination that complements itself, because pea is relatively rich in lysine and rice relatively rich in methionine. Galactose is metabolised mainly in the liver and has a lower glycaemic index than glucose. **MCT fats from coconut** travel via the portal vein to the liver. **L-carnitine** is the carrier that moves long-chain fatty acids across the inner mitochondrial membrane.

## Frequent questions

**Does it taste of nothing?**
Of pea and rice, mild and slightly cereal-like. If you want sweetness you add it yourself - berries, cinnamon, cocoa. The difference is that you set the amount, not the manufacturer.

**Why pea and rice together?**
Both sources have a limiting amino acid, but not the same one. Combined, the profiles balance out and the quality of the blend exceeds that of the single components.

**17 g of sugar per serving - is that a lot?**
It depends on the type. This is galactose, fructose and D-ribose, not added table sugar. Galactose affects blood glucose less strongly than glucose, but supplies energy just the same.
