# The chocolate milk finding: why protein and carbohydrate belong together after training

> Refilling glycogen and repairing muscle protein are two different jobs. What recovery research says about amount, timing and combination - and how WOO® Shape Kakao is set up for after training.

After the last repetition begins the phase that decides what the training turns into. Sports nutrition research has surprisingly concrete numbers on this - and of all things, chocolate milk is among the best-studied recovery drinks.

## What is actually empty after exercise

The limiting store during intense work is **muscle glycogen**: after a hard hour, 40 to 60 percent can be used up, considerably more after long sessions. At the same time protein turnover runs high: muscle protein synthesis rises, and so does breakdown.

Two separate building sites: substrate back into the cell, damaged proteins replaced. Think of only one and you leave half the recovery on the table.

## Glycogen resynthesis: amount, timing and what actually counts

Ivy and colleagues (1988) gave carbohydrate either immediately after exercise or two hours later: in the first hours the resynthesis rate was markedly higher with immediate intake. Right after exercise the muscle cell is more insulin-sensitive and **GLUT4 transporters** already sit in the membrane.

Burke, van Loon and Hawley (2017) put this in perspective: the much-quoted window only matters if the next session is due within roughly eight hours - two-a-days, tournament days. With 24 hours of rest, normal meals refill the stores. For the tight case, 1.0 to 1.2 g of carbohydrate per kilogram per hour applies.

## Adding protein: why the combination can do more

Beelen and colleagues (2010) summarised the evidence on co-ingestion. The pattern is consistent: if carbohydrate intake is below optimal, added protein measurably increases glycogen resynthesis via a stronger insulin response. If intake is already maximal, the extra effect disappears.

The protein still makes sense because of the second building site: around 20 to 25 grams with enough **leucine** triggers muscle protein synthesis. Protein contributes to the maintenance and growth of muscle mass and to the maintenance of normal bones.

## The chocolate milk finding

Pritchett and Pritchett (2012) collected the studies on chocolate milk as a recovery drink: carbohydrate and protein in a ratio of roughly 3:1 to 4:1, plus fluid and electrolytes - and in several comparisons it performed as well as or better than commercial recovery drinks.

The remarkable part is not the cocoa but the insight behind it: a drinkable beverage beats a solid plate when appetite is blunted after hard work. The best recovery strategy is the one actually consumed.

## Frequent questions
