Dietary surveys paint a consistent picture: breakfast typically delivers 8 to 15 g of protein, dinner 40 to 60 g. That imbalance is cultural, not physiological. Muscle protein synthesis does not work as a daily balance sheet but in bursts - and every burst needs a sufficient stimulus.

## Distribution beats total intake

In a controlled trial, Mamerow et al. (2014) compared two groups with identical daily protein intake: one with even distribution (30 g per meal), one with the usual evening-heavy pattern. Twenty-four-hour muscle protein synthesis was around 25% higher with even distribution. Areta et al. (2013) reached the same conclusion from another angle: four 20 g servings three hours apart produced a stronger synthetic response than two large or eight small ones.

## The leucine threshold

The trigger is not protein as such but the amino acid **leucine**, which activates the mTOR pathway. Below roughly 2 to 3 g of leucine per meal the response stays weak - this is the leucine trigger. Moore et al. (2009) put the protein amount needed at around 20 to 25 g of high-quality protein per meal; beyond that the curve flattens. Whey has an advantage here, because at roughly 10 to 11% leucine it is one of the most leucine-rich protein sources there is.

## Why fast protein fits the morning

Boirie et al. (1997) were the first to distinguish clearly between "fast" and "slow" proteins: whey reaches its peak blood amino acid level after 20 to 30 minutes, casein takes hours. After a night - several hours without intake - a fast stimulus is exactly what is called for. Then there is the practical point: a shake is drunk in a minute, a high-protein breakfast has to be cooked.
