## Hydrolysate and tripeptides: two molecular sizes, two jobs

Native collagen is a giant molecule and practically impassable for the gut. That is why it is enzymatically cleaved. **Collagen hydrolysate** consists of peptide chains with a molecular weight of typically 2,000 to 5,000 daltons. **Collagen tripeptides** are shorter: three amino acids, usually in the Gly-Pro-Hyp pattern. Shorter chains mean less digestive work and faster absorption via peptide transporters such as PepT1.

## How collagen peptides arrive in the blood

Iwai and colleagues demonstrated in 2005 that after drinking gelatin hydrolysate, measurable amounts of hydroxyproline-containing peptides circulate in human blood - above all **Pro-Hyp** and **Hyp-Gly**. These di- and tripeptides are the mechanism research actually debates: they survive digestion intact and, in cell experiments, can influence the activity of fibroblasts, the cells that build new collagen. Yazaki and colleagues showed in 2017 that ingesting collagen tripeptides raises blood levels of these peptides more than hydrolysate alone.
