# Cell protection, properly understood: why variety beats high doses with antioxidants

Antioxidants are the most thoroughly misunderstood chapter in nutrition science. The idea of "free radicals bad, antioxidants good" was left behind by research long ago - the real biology is a balance, not a battle.

## Oxidative stress is an imbalance, not a poison

Reactive oxygen species are produced continuously in the mitochondria and are not a malfunction: they steer immune defence, gene expression and adaptation to strain. In 2015 Sies defined oxidative stress precisely as an imbalance between oxidants and antioxidants in favour of the oxidants, with disruption of redox signalling as the consequence. What matters is therefore not the quantity of radicals, but the balance.

## Why high doses are not the answer

This is exactly where the simple recipes fail. Ristow and Zarse described the concept of mitohormesis: a moderate oxidative stimulus - from training, for instance - is what triggers the cell's own protective response in the first place. If high doses of isolated antioxidants are taken right around that stimulus, adaptation can be blunted. The Cochrane analysis by Bjelakovic and colleagues (2012) found no survival benefit for high-dose antioxidant supplements in primary prevention. The lesson: variety and moderate doses instead of megadoses of single compounds.

## Polyphenols work differently than long assumed

OPC from grape seed, resveratrol and curcumin have poor bioavailability - Anand and colleagues (2007) described this in detail for curcumin. The more likely mechanism is therefore not the direct scavenging of radicals in tissue, but a mild signalling effect: activation of the cell's own protective programmes and conversion by the gut microbiota into more active metabolites. Important and stated plainly: **there are no EFSA-authorised health claims for OPC, resveratrol and curcumin**. These compounds stand for ongoing research, not for proven effects.

## Photoprotection from within - what is realistic

Carotenoids and polyphenols accumulate in the skin. Stahl and Sies (2012) summarised that such accumulation can measurably reduce sensitivity to UV-induced erythema - as baseline protection, not as a substitute for sunscreen.
