# Bio-based materials: what sustainability really means for water bottles

## The break-even lies in use

Gleick and Cooley (2009) worked through the energy cost of bottled water: production, filling and transport require a multiple of the energy of tap water - for imported water, up to three orders of magnitude more.

In practice: a robust bottle filled daily with tap water offsets its production burden within a few weeks. Cleaning stays relevant - a full dishwasher is energetically cheaper than hot hand-washing.

Mason and colleagues (2018) examined 259 bottles of bottled water from eleven brands in Frontiers in Chemistry: the large majority of samples contained synthetic polymer particles. The health assessment remains open, but the finding is robust enough to confirm tap water as the sensible default in regions with high drinking-water quality - Switzerland among them.
