# Blood sugar after eating: why the curve matters - and what fibre changes about it

> It is not the fasting value that shapes your day, but what happens after the meal. What viscous fibre does mechanically in the small intestine - and how WOO® Baocol Formula picks that up.

If you only measure your blood sugar fasted, you are seeing the smaller part of the picture. Your metabolism spends most of the day digesting - and that is exactly where it is decided how steeply the curve spikes.

## What actually happens after a meal

After a carbohydrate-rich meal, blood glucose rises within 15 to 30 minutes, peaks after roughly an hour and is shuttled back into the cells by insulin. Blaak and colleagues summarised in 2012 that the height of these postprandial peaks correlates with metabolic markers - independently of the fasting value. And the same meal produces completely different curves in two people.

## Viscosity is the real mechanism

Jenkins and colleagues showed as early as 1978 in the British Medical Journal what matters about fibre: not quantity alone, but **viscosity**. Gel-forming fibres slow gastric emptying and create a viscous layer in the small intestine through which enzymes and glucose molecules diffuse more slowly. The result, at an identical carbohydrate load: a flatter curve. Guar gum and pectins belong to this group; wheat bran does not.

The regulatory position is tightly drawn: the consumption of **pectins** as part of a meal contributes to the reduction of the blood glucose rise after that meal. The condition sits inside the sentence - the pectins have to be taken with the meal, not at some point during the day. Baobab fruit powder is naturally rich in pectin; Coe and colleagues (2013) observed slowed starch digestion and a reduced glucose response for polyphenol-rich baobab.

## The second route runs through the large intestine

Inulin is not digested in the small intestine at all. It reaches the colon unchanged and is fermented there by bacteria into short-chain fatty acids - acetate, propionate, butyrate. Chambers and colleagues (2015) delivered propionate directly to the colon and observed effects on satiety hormones and food intake. This route acts more slowly, but across the whole day.

## What the micronutrients contribute

**Zinc** contributes to normal carbohydrate metabolism, to normal macronutrient metabolism and to normal fatty acid metabolism. **Niacin, pantothenic acid and vitamin C** contribute to normal energy-yielding metabolism and to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue. **Selenium, vitamin C and vitamin E** contribute to the protection of cells from oxidative stress.

## Frequently asked questions

**Why before the meal and not after?**
The viscosity brake only works if the fibre arrives in the small intestine together with the carbohydrate load. Taken afterwards, the glucose has long since been absorbed.
