# Measuring Sweat Rate and Calculating Fluid Intake: Getting Your Endurance Nutrition Right

Finding the right fluid intake during sport is crucial for performance and health. Too little fluid leads to dehydration and performance losses, while drinking too much carries the risk of dangerous hyponatremia. Instead of one-size-fits-all recommendations, it is therefore important to know your individual fluid needs.

## Understanding Your Individual Sweat Rate

The **sweat rate** indicates how much fluid the body loses through the skin per hour. This rate varies widely, typically between 0.5 and 2.5 liters per hour, influenced by factors such as ambient temperature, humidity, training intensity, acclimatization and genetics. Well trained endurance athletes often sweat earlier and more heavily, which is an efficient adaptation for **heat regulation**. Since sweat rate can vary greatly even under identical conditions, generic drinking recommendations are often inadequate.

## The Weighing Method for Determining Sweat Rate

The **weighing method** is a simple and reliable way to determine your personal sweat rate. To do this, weigh yourself **without clothes** before and after a one hour training session. During the workout, either drink nothing at all or note the exact amount consumed. The difference in body weight, where 1 kg of weight loss corresponds to about 1 liter of sweat, plus the amount you drank gives your individual sweat rate. It is advisable to repeat this measurement under different conditions (e.g. summer, winter, different intensities) to build a comprehensive data base for a **tailored drinking strategy**.

## Hyponatremia: The Danger of Overdrinking

While dehydration often takes center stage, **hyponatremia**, a dangerously low sodium level in the blood caused by excessive water intake, is an equally serious threat. Sweat contains **sodium** (on average 500-1,500 mg per liter), and anyone who drinks large amounts of water without replacing electrolytes dilutes their sodium level. Symptoms range from headaches and nausea to loss of consciousness. Endurance athletes exercising for more than 90 minutes are particularly at risk, especially in high temperatures and with high sweat volumes.
